Little is known of Benjamin Carr, creator of this account book. He was evidently a partner in business with his brother Lucius; some of the pages are headed "B & L Carr." In the fall of 1872 Lucius shot and killed himself on board an Erie Railway train, and Benjamin himself committed suicide in early May of 1873. Carr "was a gentleman of great respectability, and greatly esteemed." [Oneonta Herald, 3 May 1873]
The Benjamin Carr Account Book consists of a single volume containing Benjamin Carr's accounts of purchases, sales, and work done. Items hauled include sheep, eggs, raisins, cider, candles, sausages and more. The handwriting is not the most legible and the spelling is haphazard; many pages are overwritten with the word "Seteld" ("settled") indicating the account was paid off.
