Biographical History

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was an American poet and -- with William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac -- a seminal member of the Beat Generation. Ginsberg is best known for the poem Howl (1956), celebrating his fellow Beats and attacking what he saw as the destructive forces of materialism and conformity in the United States at the time.

John Mero is a graduate of Syracuse University and Assistant Professor of Government at Campbell University. His wife, Ali Stieglitz, was head of development and public relations for ARISE in Syracuse.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Allen Ginsberg Interview consists of a single audiocassette containing an interview with Ginsberg. The interview is 20-30 minutes long; in it Ginsberg discusses Bill Clinton, yoga, infectious diseases, and macrobiotic diets. The interview took place during the summer of 1993 at the YMCA Conference Camp in Silver Bay, New York. Other voices on the tape are Kelley Wendell and Stan Kissell, both of Ticonderoga, New York, and an unnamed Silver Bay employee then attending the University of Wisconsin. Kissell was head of basketball operations at Syracuse University.
