Biographical History

Charles Mauro (1890 or 1891-) was an American cartoonist and illustrator. Born in New Jersey, he was a soldier in World War I, an experience that informed much of his artwork. His first paying job was for the Buffalo Courier, and he spent twenty years with the New York Herald Tribune, He retired to Pulaski, New York.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Charles Mauro Papers contains artwork, both original and printed/published, and memorabilia. Most of the published Artwork consists of newspaper clippings fragile with age. Some are illustrations of crime or accident scenes done for news stories, including several of a train/automobile accident. Memorabilia contains clippings about Mauro and one photograph of him at his drawing board in a newspaper staffroom, as well as an article by Mauro about his experience aboard a ship that sank, entitled "The Last Voyage of the S.S. Rochester."
