Graham Vivian Sutherland (1903-1980) was a British painter who was best known for his Surrealist landscapes.
Sutherland was born in London. He studied art there from 1921-1925 at Epsom College with an emphasis in printmaking, after which he taught at the Chelsea School of Art until 1940. His prints owe influence to artists such as William Blake, Paul Nash, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, and Samuel Palmer, and his early landscapes were in a Romantic style. In 1935 he turned to painting and his style evolved into Surrealism. His art was represented in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London. During World War II he became an official war artist, depicting bomb damage in London in order to promote the war effort.
Sutherland was also known for his expressionistic portraits, painting figures such as Somerset Maugham and Winston Churchill. In 1960 he received the Order of Merit and in 1972 he became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
