Biographical History
Theodore Tilton (1835-1907) was an American newspaper editor, journalist, poet, and supporter of women's suffrage. He and his wife were parishioners of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher and Tilton worked as his assistant for eleven years, until 1874, when Tilton sued Beecher for adultery with Mrs. Tilton. The case received widespread public attention. Tilton subsequently moved to Paris where he lived for the rest of his life.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Theodore Tilton Correspondence consists of four letters from Tilton. One to Charles Mumford express Tilton's thanks for Mumford's coordination of the schedule and travel arrangements for 74 speeches. The letter to Edwin Studwell declines an invitation to a meeting but provides a statement to be read to the attendees, explaining his firm support for the doctrine "All Men Are Created Equal." The third, to David M. Stone, is a letter recommending to him the bearer, Samuel W. Tubbs. The last, to a Mr. Haynie, is dated from Paris; it apparently was written to accompany a copy of Tilton's latest book, "which is just arrived from the press and which arrived in Paris this morning."
