Ruth White graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in sociology in 1914. She served as president of the Women’s Glee Club and also played a prominent role in the Syracuse YWCA. From approximately 1917 to 1926, she traveled abroad for the YWCA, serving as secretary for the organization in Peking (Beijing), China.
In 1947, Ruth White and her husband Clarence Carr became affiliated with Gould Farms, a therapeutic community in Massachusetts, where they lived and worked. She remained a part of Gould Farms even after her husband’s death in 1967.
Ruth White Carr died on November 7, 1977 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
The Ruth White Carr Collection includes photographs of the Women's Glee Club, her Kappa Alpha Theta certificate, and a newsletter from Gould Farm containing a short obituary. There are also lantern slides of Chinese parables from her time in Peking, along with what appear to be her notes regarding related Bible passages.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
