Originally from Binghamton, New York, Ruth Louise Hunt Van Valkenburgh attended Syracuse University from 1912 to 1916 and graduated with a bachelor of science in Fine Arts belles lettres. She was a member of the Mu Phi Epsilon sorority and served as president of the SU Alumni Club.
Born in Truxton, New York, Oscar L. Van Valkenburgh studied science at Syracuse University between 1907 and 1911. He was chief chemist at Crucible Steel Co. of America for 45 years and retired in 1956.
Ruth and Oscar Van Valkenburgh lived in DeWitt, New York, from 1937 until his death in 1981. Ruth Van Valkenburgh died in 1991.
The Van Valkenburgh Papers include dance cards, photographs, financial documents, printed material, and various Syracuse University-related materials. Making up a good portion of the collection are the dance cards, spanning from 1908 to 1917, from the Syracuse University Senior Balls and other University-related dances, fraternity and sorority dances, and those of non-University organizations, such as the Nurses' Home of the Syracuse Homeopathic Hospital. The photographs, portraits and postcards feature Syracuse University and images of individuals. Included in the Syracuse University photographs are those of campus including the Archbold Stadium grandstand, students in front of Sims Hall, the University crew and basketball teams, and Oscar Van Valkenburgh in his room while at SU. University publications, memorabilia, financial documents, clubs and societies' documents, including sororities and fraternities, are also all included in the collection.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
