Biography
William M. Wiecek is the Chester Adgate Congdon Professor of Public Law and Legislation at Syracuse University. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Wiecek earned his bachelor's degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., his Bachelor of Laws degree from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He practiced law in New Hampshire and taught constitutional and law history at the University of Missouri-Columbia for 16 years before coming to Syracuse. He is also an accomplished author in law and has written and edited seven books and numerous articles and chapters on subjects of slavery and its abolition, republicanism, property law, English legal history, nineteenth-century constitutional development, nuclear power, and the United States Supreme Court. In addition to constitutional and legal history, Wiecek has taught courses on constitutional law, property, race and law, corporations, civil procedure and Roman law. He received the University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award in 1997 and the Chancellor's Citation for Exceptional Academic Achievement in 2001.
Scope and Content Note
The William M. Wiecek Papers contain conference material for the American Society for Legal History, lecture notes and course planning materials from courses taught at Syracuse University, correspondence, and chapter drafts from various published works on law. There are also materials from the Curriculum Committee and the Promotion and Tenure Committee, as well as his work with the Program in Law and Public Affairs (LAPA), the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), and the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI).
