International Women’s Day takes place around the world on March 8, 2025, but the whole month of March is set aside as Women’s History Month. What began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California has spread across the country. Because of successful lobbying from a coalition of women’s groups and historians, President Jimmy Carter issued the first proclamation recognizing National Women’s History Week in 1980. The proclamation is available at the American Presidency Project; learn more about the history of this important month at the National Women’s History Museum.

This year’s Women’s History Month display at SU Libraries continues last year’s theme of exploring the contributions of women to a variety of fields. The Women’s History Month Research Guide highlights the stories of women from many different professions, and this year’s expansion includes what women have done in the finance industry, the political sphere, the athletic arena and the world of science fiction and fantasy. The books included in the physical display and online guide explore women’s achievements as well as the complex existence that impact how women live and work today and in the past.
