In an unfortunate closing to the "Golden Age" of the New World, to a period of glorious colonnades daringly reared in wooded countryside, and to a style of an unsurpassed natioial aspect, this structure has reduced the Greek Revival to impotence.
Arched entablature, projecting roof and fussy window headings leave nothing to be desired in their total destruction of the qualities we have known. A hopeful gleam are the small window pediments with panels below and the basically correct antefixes of the door lintel. But the spirit is gone and it is therefore with sad regret the we close the colorful chapter of the Greek Revival in Syracuse in such a shameful fashion.
Although classicism was to return in the 'nineties, never since our earlier revival has the classic spirit been treated with such forthright understanding and loving solicitude.
Thus we have seen the period born, matured and decayed; we have seen all its facets and are now prepared for a fuller realization of the trials and cares not only of architectural development, but of our pioneer ancestors as well.
