Name: | The White Building |
Address: | South Salina and East Washington Streets |
Following the traditions of the Onondaga House, this building carried them a step further, with a resultant more virile interpretation. The cornice and entablature have been greatly strengthened, the Salina Street lintele ornamented with shallow pediments, anthemions, and antefixes. Substantial chimneys help to replace the missing tower. Here the outstanding note is the delicate tracery of the window grilles fashioned to Greek motifs.
Built by Daniel Elliot, contractor for Horace and Hamilton White and architect ot the neighboring railroad station, this building shows some signs of decay in its absolute perfectionism and turning tendency towards over-elaboration in the unnecessarily heavy cornice and wide entablature. The structure was reknowned not only as the office Wilding of the prodigious Whites but for its locally famous Oyster bar in the basement. The Syracuse National Bank which occupied much of the second floor was organized in 1830.
