Biographical History

Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925) was a French poet and writer known for his erotic and sensual themes, particular lesbian. A friend of both André Gide and Oscar Wilde, he was named a Chevalier and then an Officer of the Légion d'honneur for his contributions to French literature. One of his early works, Les Chansons de Bilitis (Songs of Bilitis), had strong lesbian themes; the Daughter of Bilitis, one of the first lesbian civil and political rights organization in the United States, took its name from this work.
