Biographical History

The American Home Missionary Society was formed in New York in 1826 with the stated purpose of "assist[ing] congregations that are unable to support the Gospel Ministry, and to send the Gospel to the destitute, within the United States." Membership was open to anyone willing to contribute financially to the Society; thirty dollars entitled the donor to a lifetime membership and $100 made them a Director for life.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The American Home Missionary Society Reports consists of reports and letters from missionaries in various towns and villages in New York to the main office in New York City. One paragraph from the 1835 report from Marcellus is typical:

There has been, since I came here, a gradual increase in the numbers of attendants on preaching of the Gospel. There is, however, yet room for many more in our Meeting house, and many families around who do but seldom if ever attend on the preaching of the Gospel at any place.

Arrangement of the Collection

Letters are arranged chronologically.
