Biographical History

No names appear in the album, and nothing is known of its creator(s). In 1905, a new car cost an average of $1594, and half of all American automobiles were in New York or New Jersey. Several milestones for the automobile industry occurred in 1905, including the first report of a stolen car (St. Louis), the first export of U.S. cars to Japan (Ford), and the founding of the Automobile Association of Britain.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Automobile Tour of Europe Photograph Album consists of a single large volume, containing 784 photographs taken during an automobile tour of Europe in the summer and early fall of 1905. The first page lists the daily itinerary (date, to, from, mileage); the mileage for the entire trip is tallied at the end as 5,973 miles.

Locations listed in the itinerary include England (London, Cambridge, Windsor, Sandown, Sevenoaks), France (Le Mans, Nantes, Morlaix, Trouville, Paris, Reims, Strasbourg), Czechoslovakia (Marienbad, Prague), Austria (Vienna), Germany (Dresden, Berlin) and Spain (Valladolid, Cordoba, Seville, Granada).
