Biographical History

Les Carroll (1912-1998) was an American cartoonist. During the 1930s he was active as an animator in various cartoon studios, including Charles Mintz, Warner Brothers, the Fleischer Studios. In 1938 he began his newspaper cartoon career; strips he drew include The Tillers, Dinah, and Life with the Rimples. In addition to his own strips, Carroll assisted Abe Martin on his Boots and her Buddies, which he took over after Martin's death in 1960. Carroll continued Boots as a Sunday comic until October 1968, accompanied by the toppers Babe 'n' Horace (1960-1961), Boots Cut-Outs and The Gooneys (1965-1968). Carroll also worked on Alley Oop and Our Boarding House, and with on Hanna-Barbera's The Smurfs in the 1980s.


Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Les Carroll Cartoons consists of original artwork for the strips Babe 'n' Horace, Boots Fashion Show, Patterns, Boots, and The Gooneys, which were distributed by the Newspaper Enterprise Association.
