Biographical History

Margaret L. Coit (1919-2003) was an American historian. Her books include biographies of Andrew Jackson, Bernard Baruch, and John C. Calhoun as well as more general historical works. She also taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the University of Colorado, and at numerous workshops.

Bernard Baruch (1870-1965) was an American financier, stock investor, philanthropist, statesman, and political consultant. Among others, he advised U.S. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt on economic matters.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Margaret L. Coit Papers consist of manuscript drafts, including deleted pages and galleys of Mr. Baruch, her biography of Bernard Baruch. According to correspondence in our files, Ms Coit had completed the manuscript of her book when a falling-out with Baruch forced her to rewrite it. The manuscript version thus differs considerably from the final version published by Houghton Mifflin.

Arrangement of the Collection

The original manuscript of Mr. Baruch and three revisions are followed by the publisher's corrected galley and the final proof copy.
