Cybis Porcelain, makers of fine china statuary and other pieces, was started in the 1920s by Boleslaw Cybis, a Lithuanian artist. Today Cybis porcelains are given as gifts of state and found in the permanent collections of museums, embassies, government buildings and art galleries around the world. [Taken from Cybis Porcelain website, http://www.cybisporcelain.info/].
Boleslaw Cybis (1895-1957) was a Lithuanian artist recognized throughout Europe for his art during the 1920s and 1930s. Cybis received a request from the US government to create a series of murals for the "Hall of Honor" at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. After obtaining citizenship, he and his wife Marja established a studio in Astoria, a suburb of New York City. In 1942 the studio moved to Trenton, New Jersey where the Cordey China Company opened, producing china gift ware. By the late 1940s, Cybis shifted to porcelain and opened a second location to focus on porcelain sculptural art named Cybis Porcelain Art Studio in 1950.
In 1957, Cybis died and his wife died the following year. Cybis Porcelain Art Studio passed to Cybis' protege Marilyn Chorlton and her husband Joseph. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Chorltons reinvented the studio by producing only original designs with copyright registrations for the sculptures. This was a "golden age" for the company. After Marylin's death in 1977, Cybis Porcelain Art Studio began a slow downward spiral with the last new sculpture design created in 2008 and the company officially sold and closed in 2019. The Cybis Porcelain Art Studio Records contain correspondence, financial material, and miscellaneous items.
Correspondence consist of a small amount of typed replies from Cybis Porcelain Art Studio to inquiries about a company catalogue, letters with the company's auditor Charles L. Companick, and various sales representatives.
Financial material includes bank statements, orders with Holland Mold Shop in Trenton, financial records for Cybis' previous company Cordey China Company, and account ledgers from 1954-1965. Some of the payroll records are restricted due to the presence of social security numbers for employees. There are 2 folders for D'orsay China containing bank statements and checks, but it is unclear how D'orsay China was involved with Cybis Porcelain Art Studio or Cordey China Company.
Miscellaneous consists of advertising brochures and catalogues for Cybis Porcelain Art Studio, clippings, a customer list for certain limited edition Cybis Porcelain Art Studio pieces, and a book entitled A History of American Art Porcelain by Marvin D. Schwartz and Richard Wolfe.
The collection is arranged alphabetically based on form, then chronologically.
