Biographical History

Lucy Duco and her husband Henry (Hank) Wiegman were born in the early 1900s, Lucy with a form of dwarfism and Hank without arms. Despite this, both Hank and Lucy lived very full lives. Hank taught himself to paint, and both he and Lucy were active in the Opportunity Guild for Shut-Ins, an organization formed in the Chicago area "by and for mentally normal but physically active adults," serving as officers.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Lucy Duco Photograph Album contains more than a thousand candid photographs of Lucy Duco and her husband Henry (Hank) Wiegman. Many of the photographs include their friends and colleagues from the Opportunity Guild for Shut-Ins, evidently taken at Guild parties or fund-raisers. One striking photograph shows only the shadow of a man on crutches. The album is remarkable for its breadth and depth, "showing disabled adults living full lives long before societal accommodations were mainstream" (quote taken from dealer's description).

Arrangement of the Collection

Single volume, pages in original order.
