Stuart Hay (1889-1969) was an American cartoonist, illustrator and architect.
Born in Sewickly, Pennsylvania in 1889, Stuart Hay studied art at the Cleveland School of Art, the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design. A practical man of ambition, Hay also formally studied architecture at the Beaux Arts Institute and at Columbia University. Incidentally, his first professional work was in the field of architecture, working as a designer for six years. Hay eventually made his way into professional illustration work, making the rounds in New York and seeing his work published in a variety of popular outlets of the 1930s and 40s, including Country Gentleman, American Magazine, The Rotarian, Pictorial Review and This Week (the New York Herald-Tribune magazine). He also did advertisements (including Croft Ale) and book illustrations; the latter include several titles by humorist Don Marquis.
Later in life Hay returned to architecture, working with Fletcher Thompson, Inc. of Bridgeport, Connecticut until his retirement in 1966. Stuart Hay died at his home in Redding, Connecticut on February 6, 1969.
A profile of Hay's illustration work up to about 1946 can be found in Ernest Watson's book Forty Illustrators and How They Work (New York: Watson-Guptill, 1946).
The Stuart Hay Cartoons collection contains 24 original panel illustrations. All are matted without captions; in a few cases the mats have come loose, revealing pencilled captions underneath. All but one are black and white ink and wash drawings, and the style is detailed and artistic rather than broad and cartoony.
Drawings are in no particular order.
