Charles Harris Kuhn (1892-1989) was an American cartoonist and creator of the comic strip Grandma.
Born in 1892 in Prairie City, Illinois, Kuhn attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts before serving in the Navy during World War I. He spent most of his career primarily as an editorial cartoonist, starting his career with the Rocky Mountain News, and spending the bulk of it with the Indianapolis News. In 1947, Kuhn launched his own comic strip feature, Grandma, with the Richardson syndicate. King Features picked-up the strip the following year, and altogether Grandma ran some twenty-two years, until Kuhn's retirement in 1969.
The Charles H. Kuhn Collection contains 62 original daily cartoons and 36 original Sunday cartoons from the comic strip Grandma (1961-1962). The collection also includes approximately 20 pieces of incoming reader correspondence (1961-1966). Daily cartoon: traces of graphite, zipatone, pen and ink on illustration board, approx. 7 ½ x 23 ¼ in. Sunday cartoon: traces of graphite, blue pencil, pen and ink on illustration board, approx. 19 x 27 in.
Daily and Sunday cartoons are arranged separately in chronological order. Correspondence is foldered.
