Jervis McEntee Diary

A description of his diary at Syracuse University

Finding aid created by: PRB
Date: May 2004

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Spanning August, 1844 to October, 1845, the Jervis McEntee Diary comprises one early personal journal of the Hudson River School artist. Written while he was a student at the Clinton Liberal Institute in Clinton, NY, the diary details McEntee's life at the school and his travels back and forth to his home in Rondout, NY. The later journals of Jervis McEntee, filled with details of the New York art world of the late 19th century, are a well-known resource and this journal foreshadows the style of observation that would become the hallmark of his reputation later in life.
