Biographical History

Ladies' libraries were primarily a phenomenon of the 18th and 19th centuries and came in two forms. "Ladies' social libraries," formed by women and intended for their use, were established by an association organized for that purpose, which would then continue to maintain the library. These libraries were general in content and existed mainly in New England and the state of Michigan. "Ladies' society libraries" were libraries belonging to a women's society -- for example, women's sewing clubs and literary societies. The Scipio Ladies Library was of the former sort.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Scipio Ladies Library Book Purchases consists of sales receipts from several book purchases made by the library from book dealers and individuals. Books listed appear to include novels as well as history, biography, and other genres.
