Kendrick P. Shedd (1866-1953) was an American Socialist educator. As a professor at the University of Rochester in 1911, he angered local authorities by stating his preference for the Socialist flag over the American flag, and was banned from speaking in public buildings by the mayor of Rochester. He resigned from the University of Rochester shortly thereafter to spare the University the bad publicity resulting from his continued presence. Living for a time in Milwaukee, he eventually returned to New York State to become the principal of Naples High School, and remained a strong figure in the Socialist party, having co-authored Some Songs for Socialist Singers, circa 1913. [Information adapted from Shedd's obituary.]
The Socialist Sunday Schools movement began in the United Kingdom in the 1880s, and appeared in the United States around the same time. In the United States, these institutions were sponsored by the Socialist Party of America, with the full endorsement of Socialist figure Eugene V. Debs, who promoted Socialist Sunday Schools as a tool to counteract the capitalist influences of society, and an alternative to capitalism-supporting Christian education.
Socialist Sunday Schools Typescript is a single item, three typewritten sheets detailing the concept of a Socialist Sunday School, written by Kendrick Shedd.
