Biographical History

Gulian C. Verplanck (1786-1870) was an American legislator and author. Born in New York City, he graduated from Columbia College (now Columbia University), New York City, in 1801, then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1807. He was a professor at General Theological Seminary in New York City for three years (1821-1824) but spent most of his life in politics and government. He was a member of the State assembly (1820-1823) and of the State senate (1838-1841), served in the Nineteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses (1825-1833), and was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

At the local level, he served as governor of the city hospital (1823-1865), regent (1826-1870) and vice chancellor (1858-1870) of the State university, and president of the board of commissioners of immigration (1846-1870), and was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1867 and 1868. He also ran unsuccessfully for Mayor in 1834.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Gulian C. Verplanck Letters consists of four outgoing letters written between 1826 and 1838. Two of the letters concern recommendations for appointments (Samuel Lewis Southard, Enos T. Throop), and one (to George Van Ness Lothrop) is in answer to an invitation to speak before the Society of United Brothers. The fourth letter, to James Madison, concerns a pamphlet which contains a discussion of the language of the Constitution.
