An inventory of the collection at the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives at Syracuse University

Historical Note

In the years since the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988, many have been inspired to give voice to the tragedy through creative and artistic outlets. The Artistic Responses Collection contains materials related to some of these creations. Works by poets, dramatists, visual artists, sculptors, photographers, and musicians are represented in this collection. Undoubtedly, many will continue to be inspired to interpret the tragedy of Pan Am 103 in ways that bring artistic beauty into the world. This collection will continue to grow as more of those works are contributed to the Archives.


Scope and Content Note

The Artistic Responses Collection contains creative works produced by poets, dramatists, visual artists, and others in response to or inspired by the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. This collection has been divided into the following series:

Dramatic works includes materials related to the dramatic works The Women of Lockerbie and The Bird and the Two-Ton Weight.

Film and television includes promotional material for the documentary Since: The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, directed by Phil Furey.

General artworks includes the original artwork for the dove surrounded by the names of the 35 Syracuse University study abroad students killed in the bombing, created by Jonathan Hoefer and used as the center panel of the Remembrance Quilt.

Music includes lyrics and sheet music, as well as two CDs that were produced by Hazel Peterson and Kathleen Sykora.

Photography consists of the album "Lockerbie: Beyond the Tragedy," compiled by Lawrence Mason, Jr.'s 1999 Syracuse University photography class.

Poetry includes works that were published in newspapers and books.

Acquisition Information

Gift of Karen DeGroot Carter, Lawrence Mason, Jr., Kathy Daniels Tedeschi, the Office of Undergraduate Studies, and various other donors between 1996 and 2019. Other materials in the collection, including the postage stamps, were purchased or acquired by the Archives. This collection consists of materials originally found in the Syracuse University: Subject Files Collection, which has been dismantled in order to from several smaller collections.

Processing Information

Materials have been placed in acid free folders and acid free boxes.
