Turhan Michael Ergin was a junior in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. Turhan was an actor and an athlete. He was a member of the Syracuse University Lacrosse team, and his teammates made a trip to Lockerbie, Scotland in December 1989, just one year after the bombing and crash of Pan Am Flight 103. Born May 14, 1966, he was survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. M.T. Ergin of Connecticut, and four siblings.
Turhan selected the following quote from Theodore Roosevelt for his high school
year book: "Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even
though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy
much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory or
defeat."
The Turhan Michael Ergin Papers comprise three memorial albums prepared by Dr. and Mrs. M.T. Ergin as a tribute to their son, one of the 35 Syracuse University students killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. These albums contain photocopies of: certificates of recognition for Turhan's accomplishments in swimming, lacrosse, and football; clippings by and about Turhan; programs and certificates for Turhan's many musical, dramatic, and choral accomplishments; photographs; vital records, including Turhan's birth and death certificates; letters of condolence, and materials related to memorial services; and documents related to memorials, scholarships, and tributes that have been established in Turhan's honor at various universities and institutions.
