Biography

Patricia Ann Klein

Patricia (Patty) Ann Klein (1953-1988) was among the 270 victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. A resident of Trenton, New Jersey, she had been in London visiting a nun, a family friend who had taken ill. She held a bachelors and a Master's degree in Education from Trenton State College. Patty worked for the Juvenile Division of the New Jersey Department of Corrections for 13 years before her death. Many of the youths she worked with recalled her as someone who helped them get their lives "together". Patty was survived by her parents, Francis and Marie Klein, her sister Theresa Park and her brother, Jeffrey Klein.

Patty was recalled as fun-loving and playful. Her philosophy on life was reflected in her poetry:

For each thorn, there's a rosebud...
for each twilight -- a dawn...
for each trial -- the strength
to carry on,
For each stormcloud -- a rainbow...
for each shadow -- the sun...
for each parting -- sweet memories
when sorrow is done.

Scope and Content Note

The Patricia Ann Klein Family Collection contains materials relating to the construction of the Memorial Cairn in Arlington National Cemetery that is dedicated to all 270 victims of Pan Am Flight 103. Frank Klein, Patricia's father, was instrumental in the construction of the Cairn. Frank was a retired builder who came out of retirement for this project, which he described as an 'everlasting labor of love'. Frank was involved with the project from the quarrying of the sandstone in Scotland to the erecting of the monument in Arlington. The Clippings series contains a photographic print of part of an article titled "Local quarry helps with memorial to the victims of Pan Am Flight 103" from The Teesdale Mercury. The Photographs series contains images of the quarrying of the stone and the construction of the cairn, and the Printed material series consists of a photographic print of a map showing the location of the quarry.
