Historical Note

The Syracuse University College of Law is an American Bar Association accredited law school founded in 1895. During the 2000-2002 trial of Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi and Lamen Khalifah Fhimah, the individuals charged with the December 21, 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, the College of Law played a vital role in keeping the families of the 270 victims updated on the proceedings. Through funding provided by the U.S Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime, the College of Law created and managed The Lockerbie Trial Families Project website. This password-protected website offered daily information on the courtroom proceedings at Camp van Zeist in the Netherlands.

Donna E. Arzt (1954-2008) was a Dean's Distinguished Research Scholar and Professor of Law at Syracuse University's College of Law. Arzt founded and directed the Lockerbie Trial Families Project at Syracuse University. During her time at Syracuse, she served as the director of the Center for Global Law and Practice and founded and directed the Sierra Leone Project, where faculty and students assisted the Office of the Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, which was established by the United Nations and the country's government at the end of the decade-long Sierra Leone civil war.
