Historical Note

Lockerbie Academy New Builidng and Cairn

Lockerbie Academy traces its roots to the Dryfesdale Public School, founded in October 1875, and re-named Lockerbie Academy in 1903. In 1919, the Academy was recognized as an approved five-year secondary school; but, in 1930 secondary education in the area was centralized at Dumfries, and Lockerbie Academy lost its fourth and fifth year students. By 1962 the Academy was a four-year secondary school and achieved six-year status in 1964.
In 1989 the Syracuse-Lockerbie Scholarship was established, allowing two students from Lockerbie Academy to study at Syracuse University for one year. This scholarship was established as a result of the bonds formed between Lockerbie, where Pan Am Flight 103 crashed in 1988, and Syracuse University, which lost 35 students in the tragedy.
In 2010 Lockerbie Academy opened the doors of a new school building. The demolition of the old structure began in 2011.
