Historical Note

Panel 6 from the London, 1988 exhibit

The London 1988 Image Collection was compiled in 2009 when the Syracuse University Archives undertook an exhibit featuring photographs from the study abroad program. "A Special Moment in Time: 1988 Fall Semester in London" opened on 21 December 2009 for the 21st Anniversary of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing.

The catalyst for this exhibit was the continuing devotion of the London 1988 alumni, many of whom attended the 20th Anniversary remembrances in 2008. The Archives solicited photographs from these alumni and from many families, and created six collage panels, which were displayed in the Noble Room of Hendricks Chapel. The panels sought to accentuate the life that was lived, not the tragedy that followed. No one was personally identified as a victim or a survivor. They all appeared as a group, the way they were then and still are in our collective minds and hearts.
