Biography

Richard A. Marquise

Richard A. Marquise is an expert in counterterrorism and crisis management, and is most well known for his role in investigating the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Marquise worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for over thirty years, including as chief of the Terrorist Research and Analytical Center (TRAC) at FBI Headquarters in the late 1980s. Marquise was involved in the investigation of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing from its inception in 1988, led the inquiry through the return of indictments in 1991, and played an active role in the trial in the Netherlands in 2000. Following the resolution of the trial in 2001, he was awarded the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service. Marquise has given hundreds of speeches around the world on terrorism and wrote the authoritative book on the investigation, SCOTBOM: evidence and the Lockerbie investigation.

Scope and Content Note

The Richard A. Marquise Papers consists of five series.

The Clippings series contains newspaper clippings related to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and the subsequent investigation.

The Memorabilia series contains a plaque that hung in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office in Lockerbie, a commemorative plate from the Strathclyde Police, and a replica of the radiocassette player used in the bombing. The FBI had a resident agency (RA) sub-office in Lockerbie that operated out of the London legal attaché (legat) for nearly four years, from January 1989 to late 1992, during which time the Lockerbie plaque was made. The radiocassette player is a Toshiba RT-8016 Bombeat model, the type used to house and disguise the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103. The radio and others were sent to the FBI as samples from Toshiba to aid in the investigation.

Images in the Photographs series include views of the crash site and debris field, which covered over 800 square miles, as well as images of the damage done to the village of Lockerbie. All photographs have been digitized and are available in the inventory section of this finding aid.

Printed material consists of a United States government poster and an excerpt from a novel by Craig Ferguson.

Materials classified as Subject files include press releases, speeches, and statements written by Marquise and others, namely government officials, reflecting important milestones in the Lockerbie investigation. This series includes a speech given by Richard Marquise at the Lockerbie Cairn service at Arlington National Cemetery on 21 December 2010.
