Biography

Reverend Alan Neal was the rector of the All Saints Scottish Episcopal Church in Lockerbie, Scotland at the time of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and crash in Lockerbie. He witnessed the explosion and crash from a nearby house. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Rev. Neal helped to put out fires and rescue people from burning houses.

After the disaster, Rev. Neal made it his personal mission to offer counsel and comfort to the friends and families of victims of the bombing and crash. He started his work with residents of Lockerbie and loved ones of victims who came to Scotland to visit the site. His efforts developed into Rev. Neal making multiple trips to the United States to visit the families of victims here. Rev. Neal came to Syracuse University multiple times to attend memorial services for victims of the disaster.

The Reverend Alan Neal Papers contain records related to Rev. Neal’s work to support the loved ones of victims of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and crash in Lockerbie, Scotland. There are also newspaper clippings depicting memorial services and the experience of Lockerbie residents in the aftermath of the disaster.
