Born in Sudan on June 17, 1945, Elia G. Stratis came to the United States in 1956. He received both his bachelors of science and masters of science degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and met his wife there in the late 1960s. Elia was a trustee of his alma mater, and a senior partner in a large international accounting firm. Elia had finished his business in London ahead of schedule and changed his flight reservation from December 22 to December 21, 1988 so he could return home to his family in Montvale, New Jersey. Elia was survived by his wife, Mary Kay; and his children, Christopher, Lia, and Sonia.
In 2001, Mary Kay Stratis joined the board of directors for Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, Inc., an organization with the goal of commemorating the victims and acting as a resource for those seeking information about the attack. In 2006, she was elected Vice President, and two years later in 2008 was elected Board Chair.
Kathy Daniels, widow of William A. Daniels, another victim of the flight, also joined the organization. In 2002 she served as Recording Secretary for the organization, was elected Vice President in 2008, and for a short time served as co-chair with Mary Kay Stratis in 2012. Kathy remarried, and her son-in-law, Christopher Tedeschi, and Mary Kay Stratis’ daughter, Sonia Stratis, were married in 2010.
The Elia G. Stratis Family Collection contain placards used to protest at Gaddafi’s speech at the United Nations in 2009, miniature Libyan flags, a protest t-shirt, and printed materials regarding Gaddafi’s regime. The collection also includes the wedding invitations of Sonia Stratis and Christopher Tedeschi.
