James "Jim" Boeheim Jr. (b. 1944) was head coach for the Syracuse University men's basketball team from 1976 to 2023. He led the men's basketball team to an NCAA Championship win in 2003, was credited with more than 900 wins by the NCAA, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.
Boeheim was born in Lyons, New York, and attended Syracuse University's College of Liberal Arts from 1962 to 1966. He joined the men's basketball team as a walk-on, and he was varsity captain in his senior year. After graduation, he played minor league basketball for the Scranton Miners in the Eastern Basketball League. He returned to Syracuse University to become assistant coach in 1972 under Roy Danforth.
After Danforth's retirement, Boeheim was appointed head coach in 1976, and he stayed with Syracuse University in this role for over 40 years before his retirement. Under his guidance, Syracuse University won its first NCAA championship in 2003, and made it to the Final Four in 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013 and 2016.
In addition to his collegiate coaching, Boeheim coached for USA men's national basketball teams. He was assistant coach for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, as well as for the 1990 and 2006 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championships. He has been a major fundraiser and a council member for Coaches vs. Cancer, a non-profit fundraising program to support the American Cancer Society.
