R. Allen Hermes (1913-2004) was an artist and 1934 graduate of Syracuse University.
Hermes was originally born in England, but came to the United States at the age of 16. He attended school in Buffalo, New York, where he won a four year scholarship to attend Syracuse University. He graduated from the University in 1934 with honors and a degree in fine arts. Upon graduation, Hermes was awarded a Hazard Fellowship, enabling him to study art and architecture in Germany for one year.
In 1942, Hermes married Helen Davis and the two settled in Redding, Connecticut. Hermes then served with the Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II, where he painted his fellow peers and officers. After the war, Hermes continued his artistic career by teaching art and showing his work in various galleries.
R. Allen Hermes' drawing is a portrait of Albert Menut, who was a Professor of Romance Languages at Syracuse University. The piece is done in charcoal on paper and is 18x24 inches.
