Gabriel “Gabe” Josephson (d. 1987) graduated from Syracuse University in 1950, and was a cartoonist. He was the creator of the Vic the Vet cartoon, a comic that focused on a veteran attending Syracuse University under the GI Bill. Josephson initially entered Syracuse University in 1943 as part of the College of Applied Science, before enlisting in the army when he was seventeen. Josephson went overseas to serve in France, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Germany. He received several honors, including the Purple Heart, combat infantryman’s badge, and three battle stars for combat duty. Josephson then returned to Syracuse University under the GI Bill and attended from 1946 to 1950. He started this phase of his college career off as part of the College of Liberal Arts, before switching into the College of Fine Arts. While at Syracuse he was involved with the Daily Orange, Syracusan, Campus Chest, Sigma Delta Chi, and the Independent Men’s Association. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1950, focusing on Illustration. Josephson went on to pursue a successful career as a cartoonist, illustrator, and freelance artist.
