He was part of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was president of his sophomore class during his attendance. Lewis is well known for his many years in the field of education as both a teacher and principal, as well as for the popularity of the over 40 English textbooks he published. He began his career in education in the Syracuse public school system where he was principal of the Prescott Grammar school, head of the English department at Syracuse High School (now Central High School), and first principal of North High School in 1908. In 1910, Lewis became principal of the William Penn High school in Philadelphia, PA until 1919. He became the Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Pennsylvania until 1923. During his time as principal at William Penn High School, Lewis developed a textbook department for the John C. Winston Company and accepted the editor-in-chief position at the company in 1923. He retired in 1942 but continued to write and publish textbooks.
The William Dodge Lewis Papers consist of the manuscripts of his written works including his Phrase Book, English Grade 6, and Shakespeare Said It as well as two William Penn High School scrapbooks, articles written by Lewis, and certificates he received.
