Syracuse University Office of Disability Services Records

An inventory of its records at the Syracuse University Archives

Finding aid created by: Kristin McAvoy
Date: 2017

Historical Note

The Office of Disability Services (ODS) at Syracuse University (now the Center for Disability Resources) was founded in 1999 under Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw. Prior to 1999, two separate programs provided assistance for students with disabilities: one served the needs of students with physical disabilities and the other addressed students with learning disabilities. The merger of these two programs created the ODS. The ODS served to address the individual access needs of students with disabilities and to promote disability access and inclusion throughout the University as a whole. In the 2020s, the ODS was renamed the Center for Disability Resources.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Office of Disability Services Records is divided into two series:

The Publications and clippings series contains external publications, brochures, newspaper clippings, and student handbooks.

The Records series contains administrative records, correspondence, internal publications, student work, reports, and faculty handbooks. Some copies of administrative documents such as reports, overviews, and evaluations are accompanied by supplementary materials that were originally housed in the same binder or folder as these documents.

Acquisition Information

Transfers from the Office of Disability Services between 2003 and 2025.

Processing Information

Materials were placed in acid-free folders in acid-free boxes. Some materials were removed from binders and placed in acid-free folders on which the original binder titles have been noted. Photocopies were made of original newspaper clippings, which were then discarded. The names and personal information of students were redacted from a small number of documents to protect their privacy.

Arrangement

Most folders retain the original titles given to them by the Office of Disability Services. Changes have been made to some titles for the sake of clarity and ease of researcher use. All materials are arranged alphabetically.
