The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at Syracuse University was established in 1919 following the dissolution of the Student Army Training Corps after World War I. ROTC prepares college students to serve as officers in the United States armed forces once they complete their education. At Syracuse University, students can choose to complete either Army ROTC or Air Force ROTC. Flight training on campus began during World War II with one the largest Army Air Forces College Training Program in the country at the time. In 1946, ahead of the establishment of the Air Force as an independent branch of the military, Detachment 535 at Syracuse University became one of the first Air ROTC units established by then Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower. The following year the program became the Air Force ROTC, or AFROTC. Syracuse University has one of the longest running ROTC programs in the country.
The Syracuse University ROTC Collection spans from 1926 to 2012 and contains mostly photographs, publications, and scrapbooks related to ROTC at Syracuse University. The scrapbooks contain clippings and photographs about the programs during the years 1957 to 2004. The Syracuse University Army ROTC Alumni Hall of Fame files hold photographs and biographical information of those honored in this program.
Some boxes are housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus. There are no access restrictions on the rest of the collection.
Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.
