Since the earliest days of Syracuse University, students have gathered together to create clubs and organizations of their own. One of the first clubs formed on campus, the Aesthetic Society, was founded in 1873. Functioning as an honorary for the arts, the purpose of the Society was to gather students from the College of Fine Arts together to exhibit art and work on professional skills. Another club, the Outing Club, popped up in the early 20th century. The goal of its members was to organize outdoor activities and adventures, such as full-moon hikes and camping trips in the Adirondacks. Other clubs and organizations have involved themselves more with politics. One such organization, the Peace and Freedom Party, was composed of a group of students "dedicated to the raising of radical issues." Ranging from art clubs to social justice groups, musical societies to associations for foreign students, the organizations and activities of the University have offered a diverse array of interests for students to explore.
The Student Organizations Collection is composed of materials related to over 120 student groups since 1877. Included are informational packets and pamphlets, event flyers and programs, organization rules, independent publications, photographs, and meeting notes.
