Biography

Florence Van Hoesen

Florence Ruth Van Hoesen was born in Rochester, New York on March 7, 1898. She received her B.S. from the New York State Library School in Albany in 1926 and began teaching in the School of Library Science at Syracuse University in 1929. In 1948, while teaching in Syracuse, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her dissertation, titled “An Analysis of Adult Reference Work in Public Libraries as an Approach to the Content of a Reference Course,” was widely regarded as an outstanding contribution to the field of library science. In 1958, the American Library Association awarded Van Hoesen the Beta Phi Mu award for “distinguished service to education for librarianship,” an honor that earned her the congratulations and praise of friends and colleagues nationwide and a spot on multiple Marquis Who’s Who lists. Van Hoesen retired from Syracuse University in 1963, after spending 34 years with the School of Library Science. Upon her retirement, the Beta Phi Mu fraternity established the Florence R. Van Hoesen Student Loan Fund in her name.

Florence Ruth Van Hoesen died on August 24, 1979, in Syracuse, New York.
