         <head>Biographical History</head>
         
      <p>Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) was an English poet, novelist and translator.    Though he initially trained as a lawyer, Blackmore retired due to poor health and worked instead as an educator, a gardener and a writer.  His best known works include <emph render="italic">Lorna Doone: a romance of Exmoor</emph> and   <emph render="italic">The Maid of Sker.</emph>  A large portion of his work was written under the pseudonym "Melanter."   </p></bioghist>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The <emph render="bold">Richard Doddridge Blackmore Letters</emph> consists of a two-page holograph letter signed by Blackmore, and a typewritten letter from the publisher Burrows Brothers Company to H. P. McIntosh regarding a signed copy of   Blackmore's <emph render="italic">Fringilla: some tales in verse.</emph>  Included with this letter is a    handwritten enclosure of Blackmore's suggestions for the <emph render="italic">Fringilla</emph> title page.</p>
