      <p>Harry Summerfield Hoff (1910-2002) was an English author who published under the pseudonym William Cooper. He was best known for his "Scenes" series of semi-autobiographical novels. </p></bioghist>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The <emph render="bold">William Cooper Typescript</emph> consists of an eight-page typed document with corrections. The typescript, entitled "The Story of William Cooper's <emph render="italic">Scenes</emph>," discusses the surpression of Hoff's novel <emph render="italic">Scenes from Metropolitan Life</emph> due to a libel lawsuit.</p><p>The collection also contains a signed, typed letter from Hoff dated 4 March 1982 and addressed to "Dear David." In the letter, Hoff explains that the enclosed document will explain the delayed publication of <emph render="italic">Scenes from Metropolitan Life</emph>. </p>
