      <head>Biographical History</head>
      <p>George Dole (1920- ) was an American cartoonist and painter. </p>
      <p>George Dole was born in New York City on July 24, 1920 and studied at the National Academy of Design, the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York and began his career as a cartoonist in 1952. His work appeared in many prominent publications, including 
        
        <emph render="italic">Playboy,</emph> the 
        
        <emph render="italic">Saturday Review</emph>, 
        
        <emph render="italic">Pageant</emph>, 
        
        <emph render="italic">Cosmopolitan</emph> and the 
        
        <emph render="italic">Wall Street Journal</emph> with freelance writers providing the gags for some of the cartoons. </p>
      <p> Dole, a member of the Magazine Cartoonists Guild, had his work exhibited in 1969 at the Sixth International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal. </p>

      <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
      <p>The 
        
        <emph render="bold">George Dole Cartoons</emph> contain 25 original magazine gag cartoons. None of the cartoons are dated. Two are labeled for the 
        
        <emph render="italic">Saturday Review</emph>. One is labeled for the 
        
        <emph render="italic">Saturday Evening Post</emph> and one is labeled for the 
        
        <emph render="italic">National Enquirer</emph>.    The cartoons are most likely from the mid to late 1960s.</p>
      <p>The cartoons range in size from 7 1/8" x 8 3/8" to 10 3/4" x 15". They were drawn on board with ink and watercolor. One cartoon was done in color watercolor.</p>
