William M. Hayes (estimated 1840-1915) was a nineteenth-century American attorney active primarily in West Chester, PA, and the broader Philadelphia metropolitan area. He was the father of John Russell Hayes, a poet, librarian, and professor at Swarthmore College. The Hayes family had notable Quaker heritage and a longstanding connection to the West Chester region.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

The William Hayes Papers consists of correspondence, financial records, and legal materials documenting Hayes's professional life as a lawyer, with a primary focus on real estate and estate law.

Correspondence includes incoming and outgoing letters, as well as correspondence neither sent to nor from Hayes. Some correspondence also includes accompanying items such as envelopes, newspaper clippings, checks, or other enclosures. These items have been kept together to preserve their original context.
