George Wesley Peck Jr. (1849-1940) was a Methodist clergyman, politician, and social reformer. Peck was the grandnephew of Jesse T. Peck, one of the founders of Syracuse University, and of George Peck, the founder of Cazenovia College.

Peck attended Syracuse University near its founding and was among the University's earliest graduates. In 1881, he became pastor of First Church in Buffalo, New York and served pastorates in Dansville and Rochester. That same year he joined the First Ecumenical Methodist Conference in London, England. Active as a temperance reformer, he was elected Superintendent of the Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany districts of the Anti-Saloon League in 1898. He served in that capacity until 1908, when he became Superintendent of the New York, Ohio, and Michigan Reform Bureau, under the International Reform Bureau located in Washington, D.C. He also served as Superintendent of the New York Civic League for Western New York.

Peck was married to Ina Merle (Carter) Peck with whom he had three children: Arline C. (Peck) Sullivan, Mary Evelyn (Peck) Wekeman, and Georgia Bell (Peck) Rice.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The George Wesley Peck Jr. Papers contains correspondence, financial material, memorabilia, printed materials, and writings.

Correspondence includes professional and personal incoming and outgoing letters. Individuals prominently represented include Wilbur F. Crafts, founder of the International Reform Bureau, and Reverend Oren R. Miller, editor of the "Reform Bulletin." The series also contains correspondence with Peck's wife, Ina, and his brother Luther Peck.

Financial materials consists of personal and business receipts.

Memorabilia includes a portrait of George Wesley Peck Jr., autograph booklet, advertisements, business cards, a calendar, church songbooks, a diary, envelopes, pamphlets, photographs, and postcards.

Printed materials primarily relate to theology, social reform, temperance, and various Methodist Episcopal Churches in the upstate New York area. Materials related to Methodoist Churches include prospective events, conferenences, and advertisements for sermons. Of interest are sermons and treatises on topics of faith, temperance, and social reform.

Writings contains one printed sermon and notes on sermons from unknown churches addressing theology, reform, and methods of prayer.
