         <head>Biographical History</head>

<p>Syracuse is a city in, and the county seat of, Onondaga County, New York. As of 2015, it
was the fourth most populous metropolitan city in the state of New York. The city
stands on the former lands of the Onondaga Nation, one of the five nations of the
Iroquois Confederacy. Officially incorporated in 1825, the city was a major
transportation hub beginning in the 1800s, first between the Erie Canal and its branch
canals and then for the railway network. It was also an active center of the
abolitionist movement and an important hub on the Underground Railroad. During the 18th
and 19th centuries, its primary industries/employers included salt and brine production,
manufacturing (Smith Typewriters, Solvay Process, Allied Signal), automobile
manufacturing (Century, 1899; Franklin, 1903), hand-crafted furniture (Gustav Stickley),
and education (Geneva Medical College, 1834; Syracuse University, 1870; LeMoyne College,
            1946).</p></bioghist>

<head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The <emph render="bold">Syracuse Maps Collection</emph> contains more than a hundred
maps of various parts of the city of Syracuse. Most are plat maps or parcel maps
(diagrams of lots with lot or parcel numbers) but there are also a few street maps, site
plans, and one or two floor plans. Some include the names of lot or property owners
(e.g. "Jones farm"); Onondaga Creek and various railroads appear on many of the maps. A
few describe the mapped area as "part of the former Onondaga Reservation." Some of the
plat maps are advertisements for lots for sale in different parts of the city, and
include prices and descriptions (e.g. "Electric railway stops within two blocks").
Interestingly, one of the advertisements specifies several property use restrictions,
including no liquor sales for fifty years. </p>
<p>Where an item has a title, that title is given in quotation marks in the inventory
below; otherwise, a simple description is provided. Formats are a mixture of printed,
handwritten, and blueprint. Although the items are numbered from 1 to 119, five numbers
are not present in the collection. All items are encapsulated in mylar.</p>
