Biographical History

Honorable Robert Beverley (1769-1843) -- or Beverly, as it is spelled in many of the letters -- was the son of Robert Beverley and Maria Carter of Essex County, Virginia. Little else is known of him. The contents of the collection suggest he was a merchant in the Washington D.C. and Virginia area, dealing in large quantities. "Acrolophos" as the address on several of the letters suggest he was part of the Beverley family that for a time owned what is now Dumbarton Oaks near Georgetown. Acrolophos or Acrolophus was at one time the name of the main house, and a Robert Beverley built the Orangery there in 1810. However, this cannot be definitively established.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Robert Beverley Papers consists of 20 items - papers, receipts, and letters. Most concern payment to or by Beverley for various items, many in large quantities. Items mentioned include a plow (in a letter from his sister Harriet Rittenhouse), a black walnut coffin, 23 gallons of brandy, barrels of herring, and several hogsheads of tobacco. Places are primarily Virginia towns -- Norfolk, Charlottesville, Georgetown, Cantine [?] County -- but at least one letter is arranging shipment of tobacco to London. There are also receipts for personal items -- watch repair, clothing for himself and son William, and "one quarter's board and tuition for wife Jane."
