According to the finding aid for the "John Carter family correspondence" (SFHL.SC.018, Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College), John Carter was the son of John and Rebecca Carter of Deer Creek Monthly Meeting in Maryland. In 1834 he married Sarah Shoemaker, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Shoemaker of Philadelphia. They were members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District and had ten children.
The John Carter Journals consist of four diaries written by John Carter, a Pennsylvania Quaker and member of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. The diaries give extensive details on life and current events during the Civil War and Reconstruction period, with particular attention given to activities of the Quaker Community and social causes 1862-1877. Carter recorded the weather each day, often including barometer readings. There is also one volume of "incidents in my father's life" written down by John's daughter Sarah Carter, circa 1893.
