Biographical History

Artist Jean Charlot was born in 1898 in Paris. He is a muralist especially known in this area for his mural The Village Fiesta in fresco at Shaw Dormitory. Other works of his may be found at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Hawaii, and various other schools and churches. He has exhibited at principal museums both in the United States and abroad.

He has also written several books and illustrated many others, primarily children's books. Mr. Charlot is currently a professor in the Art Department of the University of Hawaii.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers of Jean Charlot Papers are divided into two series. Manuscripts contains the manuscript of Mr. Charlot's book, Mexican Mural Renaissance, his sketchbook of first ideas for the Village Fiesta fresco in Shaw Dormitory, and his remarks at the dedication of the mural. Published material includes a newspaper clipping about his play, Na'auao.
